From my perspective, 'joy of work' can be regarded as dedication in making or activity. Based from Concise Oxford Dictionary, dedicate can be define as devote to a particular task. The dedication is measured by the quality of the devotion by oneself. As for the topic on 'joy of work' relate to modern thinking, we can see from the arts and crafts movement. One of the famous person who involved in this movement is William Morris. William Morris is a textile designer, but at the same time, he is also an artist, writer, and socialist. It is common to see a person with versatility in a few disciplines other than practicing art and design.

From his works in textile, he mentioned in The Beauty of Life: William Morris & the Art of Design, 'Almost all the designs we use for surface decoration, wallpapers, textiles, and the like, I design myself. I have had to learn the theory and to some extent the practice of weaving, dyeing and textile printing: all of which I must admit has given me and still gives me a great deal of enjoyment.' Based on this quote, it reflects his dedication in textile disciplines and most of its techniques. This is where the roots of excitements in the modern thinking as the modern thinking allows the dedication in creating new ideas that diverse from arts and crafts movement.

Before the comparison of the two movements, the 'Arts and Crafts' and Art Nouveau, the relationship influences of William Morris in the selected ceramic works such as Charles Passenger, Alfred Powell and Louise Powell will be discuss. Based on Oel Riley in The Elements of design, William Morris uses sensuous delight in materials and use of nature of source of pattern. Below are some pictures to give more clearer picture.

There are some similarities between the William Morris approach in his textile and the ceramic products that have been produced, where they used nature of source of pattern. The rice dish that has been done by Charles Passenger, uses Persian colour palette where it is one of the essence that historical references are used during the Arts and Crafts movement.

As time past, the art nouveau movement starts around 1890-1905, where it is also known as Fin de siècle, end of the century. Talia Schaffer mentioned in Literature and Culture at the Fin de Siècle,that the term Fin de siècle can be referred as a period of degeneration, but at the same time a period of hope for a new beginning in.

The term art nouveau also known as Jugendstil in German which means youth style. The art nouveau movement can be seen as the movement seems to be forgetting the influences from the classical times. The journey of going towards the new style where the appreciation of fine arts and applied arts are dissolved to give new breath in the new style. The new style or youth style, plays around with the fundamental of art and design or in simpler term, aesthetic. The elements and principles such as line, shape, texture, colour, value, balance, gradiation, repetition, contrast, harmony and unity can be seen in the works that have been done by some artists and designers.

A short vid thatz i came across about 'cogito egro sum', check out thiz link below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE8dL1SweCw

Hard 2 understand @ first but i managed 2 capture a quote saying;

I am i exist, is necessarily true, each time expresses by me,  or  conceive in my mind.

At first I hav d opinion of u r what u eat, n when i've read his background n some info bout him, i found out more what the meaning of cogito ergo sum:)

As for d vid, it seems that the existence of oneself in thiz world is 2 expresses oneself in order acknowledging oneself to others. Based on Rene Descartes life, i see that he is trying 2 seek his existence and purposes himself in thiz world as a human, but his belief was not strong enough 2 justify is existence and role till come up with 'cogito ergo sum'. Questions of existence of man was not clear enough for him. With the quote of 'cogito ergo sum', it seems that the quote becomes an answer to the existence of man. This quote seems a diversion of belief or should i say as ignorance is a bliss. Although 'cogito ergo sum' answers the question of existence of man, but the questions of existence of god has been blurred as existence as man has overpowered god existence. The quote is about acknowledging oneself's existence in the other people eyes through oneself expression.
